A prolific poet and writer, Baruah has authored eight poetry collections:
Aghari Dinar Diary (1985), Gosse Pohar Dia Din (1993),
Panir Ghar (1997), Tumi Ki Kavi, Nijar Eta Pukhuri Nai (2001),
Khali Botolar Malita (2006), Bodhar Baran (2012),
Hoyto Mudradosh (2016), and Okole Kobi Barhoituka (2022).
His selected poems were published in Rodbahini (2019).
Two of his poetry collections—Lines in the Void (2009, English) and
Bodh Jo Abhivykti Banna Chahata Hai (2009, Hindi)—have been translated
and widely discussed in leading literary journals, including Vagarth,
Indian Literature, and Samkaleen Bhartiya Sahitya
(Sahitya Akademi).
Critics opine that drawing from the varied experiences of his childhood and adolescence,
Baruah’s poetic journey has traversed a long and complex path into the realities of modern
urban life. His poetry is characterised by restrained emotion, sharp insight, rich imagery,
playful metaphors, occasional biting sarcasm, and a deep human concern.
Professor Madan Sarma of Tezpur University observes:
“Baruah’s poetry is marked by deceptive simplicity—crafted with precision,
rich in meaning, and rooted in contemporary vernacular while carrying subtle,
playful nuances.”
Rajeev Baruah’s literary contributions were recognised at the SAARC Literary Summit,
New Delhi (2019), and one of his poems was featured in the prestigious anthology
A Poem A Day, curated by Gulzar.
Beyond poetry, his prose works include Noidanik (2021), his only short story
collection; a critical study on Franz Kafka (2020); Kobita Kenekoi Likhu (2022),
a book on poetic craft; and Nana Dekh Upoma Onek (2024), a travelogue.
His poems have been recited by Sahitya Akademi Fellow Nilmoni Phukan, Jnanpith Awardee
Dr. Indira Goswami, eminent scholar Dr. Hiren Gohain, Dr. Amarjyoti Choudhury, and
National Award-winning actor Ms. Moloya Goswami. These recitations are preserved in
Dhunia Dekhi, the first-ever Assamese poetry CD of its kind.
His works have been translated into multiple Indian languages and various foreign languages like
Spanish, Hungerian, Greek, French,
Turkish, Italian etc. Recently Mr. Baruah
attended the World Poetry Expo 2025, held from 29th October to 1st November in
Seoul, South Korea.
